Cleaning Up Winter with Regal

Floors can be one of the main areas of liability for any facility.  The 2011 winter has proved to be a record breaking year in terms of snow, ice, and arctic temperatures.  At Regal, we want to insure you protect your investments and your pocket book from potential slip and fall accidents.  Here are some great ideas for protecting your floors…

The Need for Quality Matting

In hospitals, school, hotels, offices, restaurants, theaters and industrial facilities, mats are the first defense to stop dirt and moisture from entering the building.  Mats filter these contaminants from entering the facility saving hundreds even thousands of dollars a year in excessive cleaning costs and damage to interior floor surfaces.

70% - 80% of dust, grime and dirt in a building is tracked in from the outside on people’s feet-permanently damaging floors.  One square yard of carpet can accumulate on pound of dirt a week, twice that in inclement weather.  It is estimated that the cost to find and remove a single pound of dirt from a building can run in excess of $600 in cleaning costs.  As few as 150 people entering a facility can track in one pound of dirt in a 5 day work week costing over $30,000 annually to remove.

By utilizing a high performance entrance matting of at least 10 to 15 feet as recommended by the U.S. Green Building Council and the Carpet and Rug Institute you can capture as much as 85% to 95% of contaminants saving maintenance dollars and protecting building assets.  An effective mat Program is the Answer.  Entrance mats are the cost effective way of stopping dirt and moisture at the door and keeping building maintenance costs to a minimum.  They are also effective internally in high traffic areas or at service wipe-off regions such as factory entrances, entrance from kitchens to restaurant dinning areas, freight elevator area, office hallways, etc.

           Outdoor Matting

Regal recommends the Super Scrape by Andersen.  These mats will reduce the amount of dirt and ice melt being brought into the building.  In addition, the Super Scrape mat is resistant to oil and grease.

         Indoor Matting

Regal recommends the WaterHog line by Andersen.  Each Waterhog is specially designed with a “Water Dam” border, trapping water and dirt and preventing it from escaping onto your floor.  In addition, these mats are Certified slip-resistant by the National Floor Safety Institute.

Renting Vs Buying

There are benefits to owning your own mats.  Rental mats are very expensive as a long term matting option.  At an average of $.20 per square foot per week a single 3X5 rental mat costs a facility $780 over a five year period.  By owning your own mats you will experience substantial cost savings and you can choose color coordinated mats that compliment your interiors and are available in a variety of sizes to best suit commercial traffic patterns, all are performance engineered for the proper job.

Proper Floor Maintenance

Using afloor neutralizer such as Ecolab’s Prep Pak will aid in removing ice melt compounds from floors.  The Prep Pak is a very versatile product and can also by used as a rinse to promote adhesion and performance of floor finishes, as well as removing lime scale from glass, tile, and metal.

A standardized floor maintenance schedule will always help prevent premature break-down of floor finishes.  Frequent mopping with a floor neutralizer or auto scrubbing will aid in keeping your floor pleasing to the eye, and safe for anyone who walks into your building.
