What is Swine Flu? (H1NI)
|
|
Novel H1N1 (referred to as "swine flu" early on) is a new
influenza virus causing illness in people. The virus was first
detected in people in the United States in April
2009. This virus spreads from person to person much in the same way
that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. On June 11, 2009, the
World Health Organization (WHO) signaled that a pandemic of novel
H1N1 flu was underway.
Why is novel H1N1 virus sometimes called "swine
flu"?
Originally,
the virus was referred to as "swine flu" because laboratory
testing showed that many of the genes in this new virus were very
similar to influenza viruses that normally occur in pigs (swine) in North America. However, further study has shown
that this new virus is very different from what normally circulates
in North American pigs. It has two genes from flu viruses that
normally circulate in pigs in Europe and Asia
and bird (avian) genes and human genes. Scientists call this a
"quadruple reassortant" virus.

CDC Standard Recommendations

- Cover
your cough or your sneeze into you
 r arm (inside
elbow) or into a tissue, (discard immediately in trash). Do not
cover mouth with your hands.
- Wash
your hands frequently with soap and water and use instant hand
sanitizer
- See
your doctor if you have fever, cough, sore throat, body aches,
headache, chills and fatigue, diarrhea or vomiting.
- Try
to avoid close contact with sick people.
- Use
EPA registered disinfectants on frequently touched
surfaces.Germs can also be spread when a person touches an
infected surface and then touches their own eyes, mouth or nose.
- Especially
clean & disinfect high touch surfaces such as door knobs,
light switches, desk tops, restroom fixtures, telephones, door
push plates, elevator buttons etc. regularly.
